CANCER WITHOUT PAIN
DEATH IN CHRISTIAN SCIENCE HOME. “ A WONDERFUL CASE.” “ The witnesses have satisfied me that Miss Wear did not suffer hhe severe pain usually found in cancer cases, and if their observations are correct it seems to me a wonderful thing,” said the coroner at a Sheffield inquest.
Miss Annie Margaret Wear, aged 58 years, on whose body the inquest was held, died of-cancer in a Christian Science home in Sheffield. She had refused to see a doctor
Her brother said his sister _ hald been interested in Christian Science for about three years. When he went to Sheffield in response to a letter from the proprietress of the nursing home, saying his sister was ill, he offered to get her a doctor, but she said she did not need one, as she fully believed she was getting better under Christian Science treatment. She said she was not suffering any pain, and “ felt lovely.” He was fully satisfied that she was well looked after.
A nurse employed at the nursing home said Miss Wear entered 'the home suffering from advanced cancer ten weeks ago. The coroner: Had she any treatment, apart from px-ayer ?—No.
Surely you dressed the growth ? Yes.
The nurse explained that the prayer treatment was given by another woman 'who went away on a visit the previous night. The coroner: Didn’t she know there was going to be an inquest ?—I don’t think it was discussed. The coroner: I think she knew more than you think. The proprietress of the horn© said tihat even if it were thought that the patient was likely to die within a day or so no doctor would be called in unless the patient wished. Miss Wear suffered pain only during the first two days after she went to bed. A medical doctor said that during his 27 years’ practice he had never known another case where pain had not been present. Th© coroner: Can you understand this woman not having severe pain ? —Yes, if she was a sufficiently ardent believer in the efficacy of the treatment.
The coroner recorded a verdict of death from natural causes.
