“As the cows I milk supply me with the greater part of my living, I maintain I am a fai’meress, and, as such, am entitled to keep a dog to help me, and only pay 2s 6d, the same as a man who milks cows on a larger scale. I know my dog favours the pom. in looks but favours his sire in instinct, being a cross between a cattle dog and a pom., and larger than the pom.” Such was contained in a letter read at the Tuakau Town Board meeting on Monday evening from a woman resident, who asked for a ruling as to whether her dog was taxable to the extent of 2s 6d or ss. Although members were somewhat perplexd at first, they decided that while the canine might be used for cattle, it was not a cattle dog, and a fee of 5s was payable.
