POLICE COURT GOES “TALKIE.”

JUDGE’S EARPHONES. The entire evidence of a case heard at Manchester City Police Court recently was electro-magnet-ically recorded on a mile of steel tape, and 10 minutes after the case had concluded was reproduced, word for word, through earphones worn by the magistrate. Not a word of evidence was written down, bpt every word was recorded for reproduction as often as required. Microphones were fitted on the bench in front of the stipendiary magistrate, on the witnes-box and dock, and on the solicitor’s bench and the clerk’s table. Listening in to the “relay” c later, magistrates, with earphones over their heads, smiled as every phrase uttered, every inflection of the speakers’ voices, were reproduced by this wonderful record in steel.
