“Parents allow their children to absent themselves from school for any reason at all nowadays,” said a Christchurch headmaster to a Sun reporter. “Last week we had our annual school picnic, and on the next day there were almost as many children absent for the wharf employees’ outing. Some parents do not realise that a regular attendance at school is in the best interests of both the child and the teachers, and I had a case where a child stayed away for a whole year. It is true that he had a doctor’s certificate stating that he was not well enough to attend school, but the amazing part of it was that the boy spent the greater part of the year delivering bread from a baker’s van.
