When I was a young man, for 25s one could get the best board in the city, and the time is coming when board will have to be considerably reduced,” said Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., addressing James Clark, an applicant for a reduction of maintenance order, in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court. Clark stated that he was earning 18s 3d per week under the unemployed scheme, and drew a pension of 16s per week. Out of this amount of SI 14s 3d per week he paid 25s board. Urging him to procure cheaper board, the magistrate made an order for the arrears of maintenance to be remitted, and reduced the payments to 5s per week for six months.
