In the House of Commons a Jpill was introduced to prolong the .life of the Gold Stahdard Amendment Act, which suspended the gold standard, and the Foodstuffs Prevention of Exploitation Act. Both are emergency measures passed in the autumn of 1931 and are due to expire on March 21 and April 7 respectively if they are not renewed.
With the characteristic bitterness of French politics, the newspapers which were opposed to M. Briand’s policy heap scorn and abuse upon him while he is awaiting burial.
The correspondent of the Associated Press at Cincinnati states that Rear-Admiral Byrd intends to return to the Antarctic to determine the commercial possibilities of the Polar regions he has claimed for the United States.
The Army Estimates, presented in the House of Commons on Tuesday by T;he Financial Secretary to the War Office, Mr. Alfred Duff Cooper, showed that the amount asked for was £36,488,999, a saving of £3,192,000 an the sum voted last year.
The famous funicular rail car ascending La Turbre at Monte Carlo inexplicably got out of control and careed down the track through a wall in the Beau Soleil station, landing in a crowded street. Two persons were killed and many injured.
The N.S.W. Legislative Council has rejected a clause in the Arbitration Bill providing for the compulsory engagemeht of labour at or through the union offices..
In the House of Commons, Mr. Walter Runciman, President of the Board of Trade, stated that the Government had definitely decided that it was impossible financially to assist the Cunard Company’s new liner.
