PLAIN TALK BY MR. LYONS.
THE NEW TOBACCO TARIFF. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.45 a.m.) , Canberra, this day. • Replying to the" tobacco growers' deputation, the Prime Minister, Mr. Lyons, deprecated the slipshod and irresponsible statements of the growers, who complained that the change in the tariff was equivalent to putting them on the dole. Mr. Lyons said it would pay to put everyone in the tobacco industry on the dole rather than let things continue on the old basis, and his policy was to be guided the Tariff Board. The tobacco industry was receiving protection up to 300 per cent, and the speakers admitted that the profits were £53 an acre. If a tobacco revenue were not obtainable a heavy Public Service retrenchment was inevitable, pensions must suffer, and unemployment increase. He promised to consider a differential excise rate of ss. 4d. for imported leaf and 3s. 4d. on the local-grown article. Dr. Earle Page said this would return as much as the Government plan.
