AN ACT OF VANDALISM.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Some four years ago the Beautifying Society planted a large number of English trees on the western side of the Mangaokewa River, opposite the Esplanade, near the school. Year after year these trees have been carefully tended and looked after. Some few days ago the blackberry and rubbish was cut by unemployed labour, and the rubbish was then raked into heaps under the trees. It has now all been burnt, and a great many of the trees have been destroyed. I am certain that the Borough Council can hardly be aware of such an act of vandalism having taken place, and ratepayers should demand an explanation from the responsible person or persons for such ill-timed efforts. After these years of growth, the trees- were becoming indeed an asset to our town, and to be so ruthlessly destroyed by fire in this wanton manner is indeed a very great shame.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
