JURYMAN ORDERED OUT
SCENE AT INQUEST. A juryman who made a protest-in the Paddington (London) Coroner's Court was told to "take your hat and gO." V The scene occurred at the end of an inquest. Another case was about
to begin when the juryman protested that the jury were not doinc their duty. The Coroner (Mr. Ingleby Oddie): You are here to listen to the evidence and listen to me, and give a verdict is accordance with the facts and in accordance with my directions. Are you prepared to do that? The Juror: The jury are not doing their duty. They are like dumb animals.
"I protest against that," interposed another juror. We have heard the evidence and J am under the orders of my foreman." A police officer stated that there was some misunderstanding among the jury. An "5.0.5." was broadcast for a man who was seen to have witnessed an accident, which was the subject of the inquest, and he had not been called as a witness.
The Coroner: That has nothing to do with it. I am dealing with this recalcitrant juror now. Turning to the juror, he said: "You can take your hat and go." As he left the jury box the man exclaimed: "I consider it quite unjust. It is not right." The Coroner (to the police): Take his name. Strike him off the list, and if he comes here again I will fine him.
