MISTAKE THAT WON V.C.
R.A.F. OFFICER RETIRES. It was announced in a recent publication of the London Gazette that Group Captain Lionel W. B. Rees, an R.A.F. officer who won the V.C. as a result of taking advantage of his own mistake, is placed on the retired list at his own request. On July 1, 1916, while fighting in France, he mistook a group of about ten enemy airplanes for our own bombers, and approached to escort them. One of them attacked him, but he drove it down damaged. Five more then opened fire, but he dispersed them. He seriously damaged two, and was wounded while chasing two of the others.
