Much excitement was caused in the Dublin Harbour area when the walls of an encasement in the Liffey near the Butt Bridge collapsed, owing, it is believed, to the pressure of the tide, and a number of men were caught by the inrush of the water. Immediately after the accident two boats put off from the quayside and picked up the men who were in the water. One of them, Thomas Purdy, a carpenter, who suffered from the shock of immersion, was taken to the hospital.
