WAIMIHA

The hard-up social and dance held in the Picture Palace on Saturday, 26th ult., under the auspices of the Waimiha Football Club, was a decided success. The function was held in aid of a member of the team, Mr. Jack Repu, and from the indications he will be assisted greatly to meet expenses of his accident met at the last match between Waimiha and Mapiu teams. Music for the evening was supplied by Mr. P. Tulloch, piano, and the Tenakoe String Orchestra, composed of the following members: —Messrs. Geo. Renata, William Renata and John Kereopa, Mrs. J. Kereopa and the Misses P. Crown, Rosey Sullivan and M. Tapitahi, and the enthusiasm of the dancers was complete evidence of the excellence of the music. The floor was in tip-top order, and the supper provided was what could be expected at a hard-up social. Mr. R. Durney as M.C. was, as usual, full master of his duties. The feature of the attendance was the large number of visitors from the inland part of the district, proving what the unity of sports is when the call comes for assistance to one of their fellows. The only hard-ups at the function were Mrs. J. K. Natali and Mr. G. Spiers. Mrs. Natali wore a fancy costume of "Bills Owing," and if Mrs. Natali is called upon to meet the large number displayed then there is no question of her becoming hard-up, whatever her present position may be. Mr. Spiers wore a real hard-up costume, placarded as such as "On the Dole." George filled the bill to the full, and both were worthy of the prizes presented to them, by Mr. J. Jones, who was asked to do this on behalf of the club, and also to thank those present for their attendance. Mr. Jones made a few brief but appropriate remarks in connection with the function and the sportsmanship shown by those who had come distances to help Mr. Repu. . Items were rendered during the evening by the following: Mr. C. Gomez, senr., stepdancing; Mr. J. Collins, monologue; Mr. G. Spiers, songs, splendidly rendered. Mr. Kingi, songs; Messrs. Renata and Kereopa, duet; Misses Sullivan and Tapitahi, duet. An item by the orchestra was greatly enjoyed.
