SENSATIONAL BURGLARY

MASKED MAN IN HOUSE. EXCITING NIGHT CHASE. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.) v Feilding, this day. There was a sensational affair at Halcombe last night, when a masked man was found in a house. The occupants roused a neighbour, Mr. R. Williams, who later entered the house with a poker. He saw the masked man and hit him on the face, but the man escaped through a window and was pursued by three men, one of whom carried a shot-gun. The burglar was captured by one of his pursuers, Mr. Davies, who secured a hammerlock and threw the man and held him till the others arrived.

The burglar was lodged in the Halcombe railway station, but made a desperate attempt to escape before the police arrived. Eventually Constable Johnston, of Feilding, secured the man and lodged him in the Feilding lcck-up. The prisoner is named Isaac Johnston, a Maori, of Kakariki, aged 22. He will be charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime.
