RIOTS IN LONDON
PROTEST AGAINST DOLE REDUCTIONS. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 10.15 a.m.) London, September 30. Demonstrative crowds, bearing banners which the police seized, gathered around Bow Street Court where thirteen men .. were charged following last night's unemployed disturbance. Mounted police drove the mob back, the squads marching eight abreast and trampling some underfoot.
Irene Porteous Yed, aged 21, was arrested with a life .preserver, with which she allegedly struck a constable whom she declared had manhandled her. She was remanded with twelve others on charges of insulting behaviour and obstructing and assaulting the police. Subsequently the unemployed marched to Hyde Park, escorted by the police, where they demonstrated, but were later dispersed. Mr. W. J. Brown, a member of the House of Commons, presented to the Speaker of the House a petition bearing half a million signatures protesting against a reduction of the dole. ,
