The execution took place in Bedford gaol on Tuesday morning of Alfred Arthur Rouse, condemned to death for the murder of an unknown man near Northampton.

The executive of the Labour party has informed the Smethwick constituency party committee that Sir Oswald Mosley, its member, was unanimously expelled for gross disloyalty in forming a new party, the adhesion to which was incompatible with membership of the Labour party.

Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd announces that he is planning a second trip to the Antarctic. He proposes to approach the south Polar regions from South Africa.

Government to provide £1,500,000 for restoration work in Hawke’s Bay; surtax of 1/6 per cent, to be made on insurable property in Dominion.

The Scottish Shire Line’s steamer Buteshire, which went ashore at Chequer Shoal on Sunday, was refloated, and has arrived at Hull.

A further, drift of £1,922,000 is revealed in the return of the Commonwealth finances for Februai'y- The expenditure for the eight months of the financial year exceeded the revenue by £13,409,000.

Representations from Canadian literary organisations failed to-day to persuade the Minister of Immigration, Mr. W. A. Gordon, to lift the ban against Alexandra, daughter of Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer. Alexandra Tolstoy is now in Japan, and had planned a lecture tour of Canada. Mr. Gordon declares that he cannot make exceptions.

The Empire Marketing Board reports that prior to a canvas of Wigan, out of 272 grocers only 75 stocked Empire butter.. Now 146 more have promised to keep it. The proportion of grocers in Manchester selling it is now 80 per cent.

A virtual invitation to Australia, Germany and others to enter the American market for foreign loans is seen in the statement of a banker today, - predicting the resumption of foreign relations by Wall Street within 60 days. Economists believe that an American long-term of lending abroad is the first constructive step for world economic recovery.

The German Minister of Defence, Herr Groener, in defending the Army estimates in the Reichstag, hinted at the possibility of Germany repudiating the disarmament clauses of the Versailles Treaty unless France reduced her military forces in accordance with those clauses.
