DISTRICT NEWS

PIO PIQ (Own Correspondent.) The Arapae settlers' picnic was held on January 24th. Mr. Trenbank kindly lent his grounds for the occasion; he had erected a large marquee under the beautiful old hawthorn trees and all was done to make the visitors welcome. The day was beautifully fine, and the swimming pool was thronged with bathers. Visitors from Te Kuiti and the surrounding districts were there. It was voted the best picnic the settlers had given. A garden fete was held in Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Wilson's beautiful grounds on January 29th. The arrangements were all that could be desired, and thanks were expressed to the host and hostess for their great kindness in having the fete there, the proceeds of which were again for the benefit of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Many visitors were present. Lunch and afternoon were much enjoyed in the open air, and many groups of friends were seen sitting together enjoying it. Mrs. Charlie Jackson organised this most important part of the day's programme, and those helping her were Mesdames Haswell-Payne, Murray, Frank Coates, Terry and E. Larsen. The sweets and ice stalls looked very gay, the table of which was covered with a big garden umbrella gaily decorated. Assisting Mrs. H. Voyce and Mrs. Cayley-Alexander were Mrs. E. V. K. Allison, Miss Rose Voyce, and Miss Jessie Neal. Mrs. M. A. MacKenzie and Mrs. Frank Gould had charge of the cake and produce stall and everything was soon sold. Mrs. Robison organised the treasure hunt and Mrs. Heal located the hidden treasure. Mr. Haswell-Payne also had many interested in his game which he was in charge of—clock golf and other forms of amusement kept the people fully occupied. The cake presented by Mrs. L. Young was donated to Miss Rose Voyce.

Amongst those present were Dr. Eva Hill, Mesdames G. Symonds, Nilson, C. Johnston, J. Johnston, Weldon, Heale, Neal, Neeley, Furniss, Somerfield, Nicholas, Humberstone, Webb, Bevege, C. Smith; Misses Joyce Gould, Ida MacKenzie, Lily Box, Williams (Auckland), Dorothy Waller (Auckland), Alice Andrews, Gwen Johnston, Joyce Jackson, M. Heale, Eileen, Geraldine and Dora Allison, Joyce Nicholas, Kenny, Jill Gould, Belle Coyle, E. Furniss, F. Furniss, Lilburn (Auckland).
