"SPIRIT OF TE KUITI."
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Re the letter signed "Fair Play" in the Chronicle of Thursday, January 29, protesing at the appointment of the librarian, whom he says "he understands is_ the wife of a business man in this town and only a recent arrival." . Should the fact that the lady in question is only a recent arrival bar her in any way? In that remark "Fair Play" shows the spirit of this town towards the stranger, for from what I can see there does not appear to be any friendliness given to the newcomer. Being also a recent arrival myself I have found it so, and was told such was the case before I ever came to Te Kuiti, but then I thought perhaps it was only a name this town had got, for which, probably, ,there were no grounds, but since living here I find it only too true. No doubt it is rather a bitter pill to many that a recent arrival (whom I Jiappen to know has been here over a year) should have gained the above position.—l am, etc.
A STRANGER WITHIN THE GATES.
