WINNINGS FORFEIT
The luck of the Vancouver man, Mr. A. P. Dawe, in winning the second prize of £81,905 in the Irish Hospitals Sweepstake raises a curious legal point. An old section of the Canadian criminal code stipulates that any money won through a sweepstake or lottery is immediately forfeited to any person who gives information and makes a motion to sue in any court.
A case in point was revealed recently, when, according to a Central News message, Arthur Gann, of Victoria (British Columbia), who won more than 7000 dollars in a racing sweepstake, was served with a writ out of the Supreme Court declaring his winnings forfeited to Charles R. Sonley, of Victoria, who informed against him. Presumably this was a Canadian sweepstake. It is difficult to see how Mr. Dawe can be prevented from collecting his winnings if he proceeds to Ireland to get them, comments the Toronto correspondent of the Observer.
