WELFARE OF COUNTRY

CANDIDATE’S POLICY. AGAINST PARTY SYSTEM. “As I have announced my intention of contesting the Wellington North seat it is only right, that I should give the electors an idea of what my policy will be,” said Mr. M. J. O’Grady, who recently announced that he would be an Independent candidate for the Wellington North seat at the forthcoming- general election, in a statement he made at Wellington. “To my mind all who have the welfare of their country at heart and who desire an expression of opinion should in no way encourage the party system, which at times binds good men to vote for treacherous legislation. I hold that every man elected to Parliament should be an Independent and not be shackled by a part-" system. My ideas may seem queer to many, but I can assure the public that if I could bring about a state of affairs whereby Acts could be passed on their merits, this country, the finest in the world, would be enriched a thousandfold. •‘There is something wrong when thousands are walking the streets hungry and millions of pounds of produce leave the country. I contend that every person is entitled to three meals and a bed, not merely a bowl of soup. If work canont be found give the food to the people. There is plenty in the country for everybody. “The Unemployment Act is a farce and should be scrapped and only legislation brought down to protect the people and not harass them. Therefore, I condemn the United and Labour Parties for their bungling with the fate of the people. “There are thousands of women with husbands receiving good salaries, also men doing two or more jobs. It is a crying shame. Everyone who can find sufficient to live in comfort should be made to be satisfied with one occupation. I am sure that is where the trouble lies. These people will have to be disciplined. We should do all in our power to buy everything we eat from the country that is protecting our trade, namely, Britain. Cut out your trade with America, who buys practically nothing from New Zealand. I am in favour of a State bank. Money invested in nrivate banks is wasted as far as the general prosperity of the country goes. All the capital that returns is the interest that goes into the pockets of the shareholders, instead of the Treasury.”
