VANDALISM AT HEIDELBERG.

RESTAURANT IN CASTLE,

An appeal signed by nearly 200 of the most prominent personalities in Germany has been launched on behalf of Heidelberg Castle. Nothing threatens this most romantic and beloved of German ruins other than the proposal of a local innkeeper to assist the local taxes by opening a restaurant and cafe in what was once the chapel of the castle. It is suggested that tourists, filled with admiration at the view from the terrace gardens, would also be more likely to say it with beer, or even coffee, if there were an opportunity on the spot, instead of controlling their feelings until they came to the present place of refreshment down below'. This has not been paying of late, and both the Federal State of Baden and the town of Heidelberg are hard put to it for money. Heidelberg professors are responsible for the flaming protest, which has now been signed by personalities as various as Thomas Mann, the widow of President Ebert, and Wilhelm Furtwangler. These claim that the Government of Baden has a responsibility to the world in regaid to Heidelberg, and that both hunger and thirst can be assuaged in adjoining precincts.
