FIGHT WITH STEAM

THRILL AT LONDON STATION. An engine driver’s - and a stoker’s gallant fight against escaping steam caused a midnight thrill at Victoria Station, London, recently. The Continental boat train had discharged its passengers at the arrival platform on the old South-Eastern and Chatham side, when the engine, which was of the King Arthur class, suddenly developed a fault. A steam joint was blown off, and huge clouds of steam drove the enginemen off the footplate. The noise was so loud that it could be heard in Victoria Street and Buckingham Palace Road, and the steam clouds were so dense that they blotted out objects in the vicinity. Officials ran to the scene but were driven back by the force of the escape. Eventually, as the pressure weakened, the enginemen made their way back to the footplate, and, half blinded, managed to overcome the trouble.
