WAITOMO COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The W.aitomo County Council 1 eld its montnly meeting yesterday. Present: Crs. R. Were (chairman), J. Old, G. Georgetti, C. K. Wilson, R. W. Neal, L. R. Jones, J. Jensen, G. P. Webstei'. W. A. Lee, also Mr. F. C. Perry, County Clerk, and Mr. M. Fennell, Engineer. Business dealt with included the following:— ROADS. Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., wrote stating that a settler on the Paro Road had approached the writer regarding the metalling of the above road. The writer had repeatedly seen the Main Highways Board about the matter. Would it be possible for the Council to get some recommendation put forward by this body? If so, it would assist the writer materially with the Main Highways Board. On the motion of Cr. Webster, it was decided to write to Mr. Broadfoot stating that the ’road would be recom - mended at the next meeting of the Highways Council in March next. The member for Waitomo forwarded a copy of a letter from the Minister of Public Works advising that the Minister has indicated that three miles of the Te Kuiti-Kopaki Road are to be relocated, widened and metalled. Cr. Webster remarked that there is already a big gang of unemployed on this work, part of which had already been done.

W. E. Jones, secretary of the Aramatai School Committee, wrote asking if the Council would clear the Tiki Tiki Road where it joins the main highway, of secondary growth, the object being to improve the vision for motorists. The matter was held over in the meantime.

FLOOD DAMAGE. That the Council should apply to the Highways Board for assistance in rectifying the recent damage done by floods in the Awakino and Paemako ridings, was decided on the motion of Crs. Jones and Wilson. It was also decided to bring the matter under the notice of the member for Waitomo. UNPAID RATES. The Council authorised procedure to be taken for the recovery of arrears of rates. MISCELLANEOUS. A circular on behalf of those concerned was received, soliciting the support of the Council in the installation of automatic barriers at railway crossings. The invention, it was set out, was that of an Aucklander and it was claimed to be a solution to the eliminating of level crossing accidents. No expression of opinion was given by the Council.
