THE KING COUNTRY.

TWENTY-FOUR YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE CHRONICLE

December 14,1906: Mr. C. R. Vickerman, resident engineer for Auckland district, passed through the King Country last week, and returned to Auckland on Monday. When in Te

Kuiti, Mr. Vickerman visited the re-

cently acquired Government reserve, and it is hoped the outcome will be the early commencement of the proposed public buildings. The freehold of the land is vested in the Government and a sum of £3OO appeared on this year's estimates for a courthouse at Te Kuiti.

Mr. Greenslade, M.H.R., has received word from Sir Joseph Ward that the Hangatiki-Waitomo telephone extension will shortly be put in hand. Pio Pio: A bachelors' ball was held* on Friday last in the hall at Miroahuiao, and a large number attended from Paemako and surrounding districts. Messrs. Fitzpatrick and Trust were M.C.'s and attended to the guests admirably. Dancing commenced at 8 o'clock and the music was supplied by J. Whitinui.

King Country .Roads (editorial): Of almost, if not equal importance with the Native land problem, is the question of roads in the King Country. So much, of the prosperity, both individually and collectively, of the district depends upon ready means of access to the railway and markets. . . . This is no party matter to be used for the purpose of political jobbery or wire-pulling, but a subject upon which every dweller in the Rohe Potae can act in unison. Pathetic pictures could be drawn of hardships nobly borne and sufferings silently endured by our sturdy pioneers. Personal: Mr. P. R. Colebrook, of the firm of Green and Colebrook, Ltd., will shortly visit the Eastern States of Australia, returning via the South Island.
