WELLINGTON'S HARD TASK

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wellington, this day. In the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Auckland, the latter made 433 runs in the first innings and declared the second innings closed when 354 runs had been scored for the loss of four wickets. Wellington scored 283 runs in the first inning, and at noon had scored 110 runs for. the loss of four wickets in the second.

The final day's play opened in fine weather with a fresh southerly wind. Light rain overnight had had little effect on the wicket, whiqh was still in excellent order. The two Wellington not. out batsmen, Hollings (32) and Foley (13), continued their innings to the bowling of Allcott, who was assisted by the wind, and Wensley. Progress was slow, though several byes helped to improve the total. Foley survived a confident appeal for l.b.w. in Wensley's second over. Ninety appeared after a quarter of hour's play. At 11.30, Allcott clean bowled Hollings, who had played a sound defensive ininngs, the outgoing batsmen contributing 34 runs. Lowry was the next man in. After playing a defensive innings for 55 minutes, Foley lifted Wensley to Gillespie at cover point, and the Eden man he! the catch. Four wickets were down at this stage for 98 runs, Foley making 21. McLeod, who had made a century in Wellington's first innings, then joined his captain. The century appeared after the innings had been in progress 145 minutes. At noon Wellington had lost four wickets for 110 runs, Lowry (5) and McLeod (4) being the not out men.
