QUESTION OF LICENSE.

AT CHATEAU TONGARIRO.

SUGGESTION GAINS SUPPORT.

Responding to the toast of “Parliament,” proposed at the banquet held at Chateau Tongariro on Monday night, the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre alluded to the question of liquor in the King Country. He said it was a pity the Chateau would not be able to pz-ovide its guests with liquor at meal times. The position was absurd. He had always advocated that all tourist centres should have a license. What would overseas visitors say when they came to the Chateau and found that they could not have a drink with their meals? The position was very much to be regretted. He thought that an organisation that could raise money to build a great building like the Chateau could surely raise enough influence to get a license. It had been said that we had promised the natives that there would be no licenses in the King Country, but that had not meant that there was no liquor in- the King Country. It was his opinion that the granting of a charter to the Park Company would in no way break the compact with the Maoris. The Government should give a civil charter to the Company and supply liqour to guests at the Chateau alone. That would overcome the absurd position existing at present, and would do no harm to anyone.
