CURES FOR INSOMNIA.
The greatest danger of insomnia
lies in sleeping drugs. It la the easiest thing in the world to "cure" sleeplessness at the beginning. You take a gentle pill or potion, and there you are. Nothing is simpler. Unfortunately, the quantity of dope must gradually be increased. At last, even the heaviest doses become ineffective, and in the meantime body and brain are being poisoned through and through. There is no universal cure for sleeplessness. If it is due to a raging tooth one must pull out the tooth. If it is due to a heavy supper, one must rearrange the meals. If it is due to lack of exercise, a sharp walk of adequate length should be taken just before going to bed. If it is due to the overheated condition of the body, the diet should be rearranged. If it is caused by nervous excitement, one should inquire into the causes. Most cases of insomnia can readily be cured without bromides, which are ruinous to body and brain. There are gentler sleep-givers than opium and morphia. The rearrangement of the bed, massaging of the feet when in bed, reading of a dull story in a monotonous voice, a dish of onion gruel last thing at night, and similar simple means, are safter than potent medicines and often far more beneficial.
