DISTRICT NEWS.

TANGITU (Own Correspondent.) The rain that fell during Wednes-. day and Thursday of last week was needed very much and welcomed by all. Since then up to date we have had some fine sunny days with oold snaps in the night, and one or two chilly days. Pastures are looking well.

Miss Gwen Ranby, of Hamilton, who has been on a visit to Mr and Mrs J. Waldron, Mokauiti, for a week or so, left by the morning train from Waimiha en route for Auckland, where she will spend the remainder of her holidays. We are pleased to be ablo to report that Mr F. Proctor, teacher at the Tangitu school, who is now an inmate of the Taumarunui Public Hospital (as previously reported), is recovering from his illness as well as can be expected. He has now been allowed to get up out of bed, and from news received we can look forward to seeing him here again at the end of a week or so, though it will be some time before he can take up duties again. The chairman of the Tangjitu school, committee received word from the Auckland Education Board on Friday, 25th ult., notifying him that Miss A V. McGuire, of Te Awamutu, would attend the school as relieving teacher from Tuesday, 29th October. Miss McGuire arrived here on Monday last, and will "take up her duties as stated above.

News has just come through that ne of the oldest settlers in this district, in the person of Mr D. Shaw, has died at the Public Hospital, Hamilton. Mr Shaw had suffered for some years, and had been an inmate of the above hospital for the last nine months, and as reported in these columns some time ago, it was intended to operate upon him, but owing to his being so weak this could not be done. All settlers and residents of the district will regret to learn of his death, and the heartfelt sympathy of all will be extended to the widow and children. Mr Shaw was one of the most respected settlers in the district and will be keenly missed in the various social activities for its progress.
