CONFERENCE AT TAUMARUNUI.

BIG ASSOCIATION WANTED. TO DEVELOP THE KING COUNTRY. The secretary of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce wrote to the meeting of the Borough Council held last evening as follows (says yesterday’s Taumarunui Press): — At a meeting convened by the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce held on June 12 the following resolution was carried unanimously:— “That the various Chambers of Commerce, local bodies, and other organisations be written to with a view to one united association being formed to work for the development and progress of the King Country.” The general opinion of the delegates was that the time is now opportune to try to find a solution of the many problems of the King Country, and that this can only be achieved by co-operation and unity between the various organisations. The King Country has great potentialities, but the development of these is being retarded owing to the many handicaps with which the district has to contend. The outlook for the man on the land has vastly improved in the last 12 months, and with this there should be a decided impetus to land settlement. There is no district in the whole of the Dominion that offers such opportunities in this direction as the King Country, but the first thing is to place its resources in a proper perspective; and this is only possible by co-operation. It is now proposed to hold a conference on the lines of the resolution at the Parish Hall, Taumarunui, on August 31, and. it is the sincere wish of the promoters that your Council', will send a delegate. The Mayor said it was only right that the Council should be represented at the proposed conference. He thought if a delegate was appointed lie ishoukl be given certain and definite instructions. He moved that Cr Steadman bo appointed as the Council’s delegate to attend the conference. Or Ward seconded the motion.

Cr Steadman said if a big organisation was to be formed to assist with the development of the King Country the Mayor should be the delegate. Or Dryland moved as an amendment that the Mayor be the delegate to represent the Council Cr Steadman seconded the amendment, which' was carried.
