MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS.
DEPUTATIONS BY COUNTY COUNCILLORS. After the ceremony in connection with the opening of the Mokait Bridge, the Minister of Public Works, Hon. K. S. Williams, was approached by various members of the Waitomo County Council in connection with works in the districts. The chairman, Mr. L. Jones, asked that a special grant be made of £8,500 to renovate certain defined roads throughout the county. This sum would be spent in shingle and the County would carry out the work. The Ministed stated that it was a large sum to ask for, but it might be possible to make a grant of some kind for this purpose. He said he would consider the matter on his return to Wellington. Mr. C. K. Wilson stated that a grant of £2 for £1 had been made for Hunt’s Road, but only half this amount (£400) had been placed on the estimates. He asked that the balance be made available in order that the work might be completed. Cr. S. Pratt approached the Minister in regard to Continuing the read from Mangapeehi Road to Pore* c-taroa, and that this be pushed on in order to give the settlers in this area who had been there for 20 years, access to their properties. There had been an allocation of £SOO for this work, but so far it had not been spent. The Minister stated that he would consider these two requests on his return to Wellington. Messrs. Tolme and Webster (Aria), supported by Messrs. Shaw and Penn, of the New Plymouth Chamber: of Commerce, waited upon the Minister to ask that some action be taken in regard to the Totoro Road and bridge over the Mokau River. Tt was pointed cut that the opening up of this road would bring Aria and Mahoenui close together. The opening of this road would also give an alternative stock route between the King Country and Taranaki as far as Mahoenui, and save the main road from Pio Pio to Mahoenui.
The Minister promised that he would go fully into the matter immediately after the New Year and see if it was possible to accede to the request.
