IS THIRTEEN UNLUCKY?

o The number thirteen hardly deserves its black reputation, which it has had ever since there were thirteen at the Last Supper at which Our Lord was betrayed. Hence the firm conviction that if this number sit down to table one of them will shortly afterwards die. The fact of the matter is, as astrologists tell us, that thirteen is only unlucky to certain people. On others it has no more potent effect than any other number, while a few people declare that it always brings them good fortune. A rule which has been very carefully worked out and proved over and over again by a celebrated fortuneteller is that thirteen has most significance in the lives of people born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st of any month; but this prominence is more marked and powerful if the birthmonth should be either July, August or January. For July or August people born on these dates thirteen will generally prove fortunate; for those born in January on one of these four days it will also be eventful, but usually unluckily so. All such folk will find their thirteenth year one of change and importance. Thirteen is the number which belongs especially to Uranus, and this little-known planet has dominion over people whose birthdays occur between January 20 and February 20. To them thirteen is the ruling number, and their lives will be apt to fall into epochs of about thirteen years each. Thirteen is a sudden number: hence partly, its reputation for misfortune, as misfortune is often unexpected. To Uranus-born folk it is always the unexpected that happens, either for good or evil. Continually some unforseen event will suddenly alter the whole course of their lives and is apt to be connected in some way with the ! number thirteen. For instance, one girl born under Uranus lived for several years at a house numbered thirteen, and during '

those years her life was more lull of sudden events than at any other per-,, iod. Jobs were abruptly offered her; friends arrived from distant parts of the earth without a moment's warning; quarrels arose in an instant; she fell in love practically at first sight with a man she met during that time, and her affection was equally promptly returned. In fact, while she lived at that house her life was a series of upheavals, some good and some bad, but all entirely unexpected. The bad luck of thirteen, in cases where it is definitely unlucky, has this redeeming feature, that out of its evil, good always comes at last, and people look back on their adversity as a time that has taught them the best things they know. So it is not really a number to be frightened of. Of course, the unknown is always alarming, and thirteen is particularly associated with the unknown. But from its clouds sunshine always emerges in the end.
