WASHOUT ON LINE.
OVER HALF A MILE.
TORRENTIAL RAINS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Taumarunui, this day.
A cloudburst between Kakahi and Owhango last evening washed out the Main Trunk line over a distance of half a mile and delayed the first express from Wellington for four hours. The limited expi’ess from Auckland was held up for an hour. The other trains were nearly on time. The cloudburst occurred shortly after 5 o’clock last night. The creek running on the top of the cutting flooded, broke its bank and poured in a deluge down the railway cutting, washing out the line for half a mile. A gang worked from 7 o’clock till 1 o’clock before the line was made temporarily safe. Torrential rain damaged the roads, causing several washouts. Telephone communication with Owhango is cut off.
(The express from Wellington arrived at Te Kuiti at 5.38 this morning—--3£ hours late—and the “limited’’ was delayed for half an lrdar. by the mishap described above.)
