A young native recently appeared at the City Police Court at Whakatane and presented what he took to he a summons (states the Press). The court officials, however, did not remember having taken proceedings against this individual, so they examined the document and found that it had never been issued from the local court. The young native had a companion who was inclined toward. 1 : practical joking, and ihe latter hind conceived the idea of sending Ihe document to his friend, perhaps without thinking of the consequences to himself. Ills native friend, however, took the matter more seriously, and duly appeared at court, only to he told to go home. The final and most serious act in the comedy occurred a few days ago, when the manufacturer of the document was fined lOs and 32s costs for issuing an imitation of a judicial process. A novelty lias appeared on the market in the shape of a toasted tobacco, which has caused quite a sensation in smokers’ circles. The process of toasting seems to have a most beneficial effect upon tobacco, similar to what cooking, broiling and roasting has on food.
