The many friends of Mr- Beri Nealon will ho pleased to know that ho is now about again, and is making a good recovery from his recent illness. Mr 1L Ormsby met with a. nasty accident about 7 a.m. on Wednesday last. Mr Ormsby was riding an ordinary bicycle, when the forks collapsed, throwing him heavily to the ground. He was badly cut about the face, and! has since been confined to his home, and making a good recovery. Front 200 applicants for the position of engiueer-in-ehief to the West Australian Government, Mr F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief and Undersecretary lor Public M orks in New Zealand, wtvs selected recently. Notwithstanding the attractive salary (.02500 per annum, with annual increments of 0100), Mr Furkert withdrew his application, and the next selection was Mr H. J. Deane, 8.E., of Sydney. Albeit Norman Smith, 26, married, employed as a, surfaceman on the railway, was run into on Thursday morning by tho Ohakuno-Taihape passenger train and sustained injuries which resulted in his Meath in the afternoon. Deceased was attending to a jigger on the railway and' took no notice of the warning whistle. The brakes were applied at once, but the train could not vbe stopped in time to avert the accident. The claim that Mr G. H. Shute, of Kaupuni Street, Mastertoin, was the oldest New Zealand-born white man in the DomthToiii, having celebrated his eighty-second birthday on Christmas Eve, was recently made. This claim, however, can bo improved up by Mr G. Holland, of Fillis Street, New Plymouth, win) celebrated his eighty-sec-ond birthday on November 26, and so is nearly a month older than Mr Shut©. Mr Holland, who is still hale and hearty, knew Mr Shute and his father many years ago during the troublesome da vs of the Maori War and t-lie years following. Mrs Hollard, whei was also born in Now Zealand, is still alive and well. She celebrated her eighty-third bii-tlulay on Juno 23 last and would appear lo justify the claim to be the ohk esi. Now Zealand-born white woman in the Dominion.
