OTOROHANGA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) The members of the Otorohanga Amateur Operatic Society held a social function in Closey’s Hall on Monday evening last week, when the ladies presented Mrs A. E. Cooke with a silver plated sugar bowl and spoon in recognition of her kindness to them. Dancing was indulged in and supper provided by the ladies, A meeting of the settlers of the Honikiwi district was held in Mr B. Budden’s barn on Thursday last to consider tho question of repairs tol the Honikiwi Road. Mr R. P. Hill, the member for the riding, presided, and the County Engineer, Mr E. R. Gould, was also present. A discussion took place as to the means off raising the necessary money to carry out the required work. Some settlers favoured the idea of forming a working bee amongst themselves. After further discussion it was decided to adjourn the meeting until the financial position of the riding at the 31st March was disclosed.
A meeting of the settlers in the Kio Kio-Mangaorongo district was held on Friday last to consider the advisability of commencing a cheese factory at the corner of the Mangaorongo and the Otorohanga-Kihikihi Roads. It was decided to canvass the district and obtain information as to the number of suppliers available and to hold a. further meeting when the information so obtained will be discussed.
The output df the local butter for the past season has exceeded 1000 tons, and considering the dry season experienced, and l also the fact that 500 tons of butter formerly made here are now being made at Frankton, this figure must be regarded as satisfactory. PERSONAL. The death occurred at FranktonJ unction recently of Mr J. T. Levett, of Papakura. Mr Levett was on his way to visit his .daughter when the news was received by her that he had died suddenly as above. The deceased was the father of Mrs T. Kearins, of Kio Kio, and Mrs P. Kearins, of Kopaki. The Rev. D. K. MacPherson, who has accepted the cure of Pleasant Point, Canterbury, left Otorohanga on Tuesday last, accompanied by Mrs MacPherson. They purpose spending a holiday at Auckland before going South. WINTER GAMES. Tho football season opened here on Saturday last, when the local seniors met and defeated the Pi© Pio seniors by 21 points to nil. The winners played a fast, open game throughout, their backs handling and passing the ball well in spite of the slippery nature of the grofund, all their points being scored by the backs. The game was a clean one from start to finish, being free from the unpleasant incidents which were to be seen last season. For the local team tries were scored by Tiapski, Harrisdn, Hoar and Craig. Mr Crosby was referee. The Huia juniors journeyed to Otewa on Saturday and defeated the Otewa juniors by nine points to nil. Owing to the unfavourable nature of the weather the opening of the golf club was postponed until Saturday next.
