TE KUITI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

ANNUAL REPORT. The following is a summary of the report to be submitted by the chairman of the school committee (Mr A. F. Howartb) at the annual meeting of householders to be held on Monday next, the 14tli iust...: — During the year efforts have been mainly directed towards improvements to the school grounds, the equipment of a. library, and other matters arising out of the administration of the Carnival funds. The amount of Carnival money expended throughout the year was as follows :

The total amount of Carnival moneys in hand, either in the school fund or tho post office savings bank, at the commencement of the current year was £479 10s. A subsidy of £ for £ on the amount spent during the current year lias been applied for by your committee.

The shelter sheds and tearooms have been completed. During the winter months a band of lady workers carried out the dispensing of hot cocoa. The thanks of the householders are due to these ladies ,and to Mr Bathgate for the work in this connection. The school grounds have been brought into a. very satisfactory condition during the year. The paths have been neatly laid out and all spare ground in the front of the school has been laid down in permxnent lawn and flower borders. Ilie latter are looked after by the children, and keen competition takes place between' the various classes for the honour of owning the most attractive bed.

Another matter to which the committee has paid great attention has been the establishment of a school library for each class in the school from Standard I up to the High School. A very excellent selection of books of all classes has been purchased, in tho choice of which the committee has had to depend to a large extent on tho advice and assistance of the Headmaster and staff. The total amount spent during the year on hooks and cupboards for the same amounts toi £B7 3s 6d, making a total of £143 12s 8d spent on the school library since the Carnival.

During the year the committee purchased and installed a gramophone in the school at a cost of £2l, and has purchased records at an additional cost of £lB 16s. The gramophone lias proved intensely popular with the children, and as a means both of education and recreation,, it has amply justified its purchase. As a result of representations made to the Minister of Education on his recent visit, a promise lias been made to the committee that complete new lavatory offices would be built after the 31st March.

During the year the committee has kept up its constant pressure on the Education Department for the erection of a Technical High School on the site of 13 acres acquired by the Department in Te Kuiti, but up to the present the Department lias intimated that there are no funds available for the work. In consequence of the lack of room in the school, the committee succeeded during the latter part of the year in obtaining a recommendation from the Education Board to the Education Department for the erection of three new rooms to tho Technical School site which would accommodate the High School department for the time being, and which would, form a nucleus of the Technical High School to he erected at a later date. This recommendation is now being 1 dealt with by the Department, consideration having been postponed until after the 31st March.
