CUSTODIAN APPOINTED
The Council considered five applications for the position of custodian to the municipal buildings, finally appointing Mi's Transon. A RATEPAYER’S COMPLAINT. J. F. Lever complained of the hardship lie was labouring under in regard to rates on his property in ‘the borough. He said he wished to strenuously protest against the handicap put upon him through having to pay £l3O 4s 2d yearly on his property, and desire that the Council, in justice and equity, will give the matter favourable consideration.”
According to liis letter he had paid rates on the property “since 1912, amounting to close on £IOOO, add have not had, in return, the benefit of the expenditure of a single pound by the borough towards giving me the public facilities generally provided for the , ratepayer.” He considered the property had been over-valued, and had persuaded the Government to agree to another valuation. He asked tlie Council to “give bin* every consideration that is possible.” The Mayor agreed that the applicant was in an unfortunate position in regard to the situation of his property. The town clerk said that Mr Lever knew the Council could not legally reduce bis rates, but wished to know if tlie enforcement of the rate demand could be delayed, pending a re-valua-tion. Cr Somervilc: If you agree to that in one case, you’ll have to do it in all cases. The Mayor thought that such a proceeding would be “playing with fire,” and on his motion the letter was “received.” A similar application from Mary Shaw met with the same fate. ARREARS OF RATES. Messrs Hine, Howarth and Vernon reported having collected £347 14s 3d in arrears of rates since the collection of same had been entrusted to them. Details were also given of projected proceedings expected to realise a further £SOO in the course of a few weeks.—Received. TAXI LICENSE.
