SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

CRICKET. PIO PIO'S SURPRISE WIN. OTOROHANGA FORFEIT. The Maiftapoto Cricket Association's competition was advanced another stage on Saturday, when Pio Pio met and defeated Te Kuiti on the Domain. It would be much more .satisfactory if those who control the Otorohanga* team could advise their opponents if they did not intend to play, as the whole of the United team were on the ground awaiting the arrival of the Otorohanga men.

On the other hand, the action of the Pio Pio team in coming in with only seven men was quite in keeping with the spirit of the members of the Pio Pio team. Pio Pio, unexpectedly, in the circumstances scored a meritorious and popular win.

Liddel woh the toss and sent Pio Pio in to bat, Ronaildson and Francis opening to Burton and Lusk. Francis was bowled by a beautiful ball from Burton, and Ronaldson was out l.b.w. Naish played a good innings for 18 badly needed runs, and Thorburn hit hard for 19. Dodd quickly disposed of the emergency batsmen, who' were local boys, and the innings closed for 50—a small score for Te Kuiti to get. Dodd secured the best bowling figures—3 wickets for 3 runs. Given plenty of practice, Dodd would make a good fast bowler, as he comes off the wicket exceptionally fast. TE KUITI'S FAILUEE. Te Kuiti opened with Williams and Burton. Jackson, who was suffering from an injury, gave way to Francis and Naish. These two went right through the Te Kuiti team, only Burton (15) and Latta (11) making any showing with the bat, the whole team being disposed for 46, four runs behind the Pio Pio total. Ronaldson, in the absence of Ashworth, handled the team exceptionally well, and with such limited possibilities too much credit cannot be given to Ronaldson and to Naish and Francis, who bowled exceptionally weiy, Naish getting G wickets for 19 and Francis 3 for 8. It is worthy of mention that two of the boys—Haughey and Fletcher—brought off. two remarkably good catches. Pio Pio apparently are now in an almost unbeatable position for the Hamill Shield.
