Local golfers spent the holiday in practice matches on the links. A number of players visited Te Awamutu and had an enjoyable day. The postmaster, Mr Rom. Blakeley, advises that letters formerly superscribed " via Suez " should now be marked " by first direct steamer."

Rev. Father R. P. Finn received the sad news yesterday that the Rev. Father Patterson, who was very well known all over the province, died at Devonport yesterday.

The Great Northern Huidles and Steeplechase at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, are special features of this week's issue of " The New Zealand Sporting and Dramatic Review, the competitors being depicted with wonderful detail in the progress of each event. Snapshots showing the enormous crowd present at Ellerslie make an interesting spectacle. The Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting is also represented in a comprehensive series of views. An assortment of topical views and pages of photographs devoted to British naval supremacy form a budget that should make a universal appeal.

Efforts are being made to get bockey teams going this winter. A team of shop girls ia ready to meet the Te Kuiti Hockey Club as soon as the latter body is ready. Twenty or thirty men, some of them having been district reps., are stated to be willing to commence the formation of a club.

All arrangements have been completed for the Bowling Club dance to-night. The programmes have been printed and the dancing will commence at 8 p.m. sharp. The sale on tickets has been excellent, saya Mr J. B. Young, and a good crowd is expected. A reminder is again given that evening dress is unnecessary.

The Waikato Winter Show was opened on Tuesday by the president, Mr W. J. McKee. It was rather unimpressive. There was only a very short speech from the president, and much to the surprise of many onlookers, the member for the district, Mr J. A. Young, and the ex-president of the Waikato Winter Show Association, Mr F. Pemberton, who were on the stage, were not invited to speak.

Mr J. R. Graham, auctioneer, announces that owing to the halfholiday now falling on Saturday, he will in future conduct his weekly mart sale on Friday, at 1.30 p.m. A further entry for this week'B sale consists of two tons of undamaged wire.
