MISSING BANK NOTES
ONE TRAOED TO AUCKLAND. One of tlifi National Bank of New Zealand £1 notes stolen from the Ruahine was in circulation in Auckland for a few hours during thi> latter end of last week. It was successfully passed into a fancy good's dealer in Karangahape Road, who included it in his lodgment for the Newton branch of the Rank of New Zealand, but on being presented along with other money was immediately discerned by the teller as one of the missing notes. It is understood that this is the first of the 1000 stolen to be traced to Auckland. Like the others found in the Southern cities, the note had been signed. The police are investigating the matter. Another of the stolen notes was found among the cash at a Lyttelton hotel on Saturday. The nolfs wfcrc sonsigned from London to the Dunedin branch of the National Hank of New Zealand, and were deposited in a locker on the steamer. The bundle was first missed from the steamer in the South Island, arter tlie Hiiahine had called in at Auckland first, Wellington, and then South, ouite a number of the notes are in circulation in Wellington, where 25 have been traced to date. There are 1000 notes, all of the valuo of £l, missing. The numbers are from 599801 to 600000 inclusive, and 600201 to 601000 inclusive.
