METEOROLOGICAL.

Mr T. M. Butts, observer, Te Kuiti, lias supplied us with the following rainfall returns for the month of October;— Total fell, 8.62 inches; rain full on 21 days, tho maximum fall baing on the 14th., when 1.55 inches wore recorded. Comparisons: 1915, 5.84 inches; . 1916, 10.42 inches; 1917, C.49 i n ches. Waitomo Caves. —Total rainfall, 12.63 inches; roin fell on 21 days, the mßximum fall being on the 21nr, when 1.71 inches fell. Compari- "'" sons:—l9l4, 1.82 inches; 1915, 7.79 incheß; 191G, 14 49 inches; 1917, 9.39 inches. An unsettled month with rainfall 60 per cent, above the mean of previ iua years, while the barometric pressure was slightly "_ below the mean. The total amount of wiod ia the highest an record; westerly being the predominating wind. The average temperature in the shade was 56deg., the maximum 62 degrees, and the minimum 47 degrees. There were six sunless davs and thunfler was recorded on five days. Observation hour 8 a.m. —Cecil S. Johnston, Observer. Puketiti-Pio Pio —The total rainfall for the month of October was 16.60 inches, rain falling on 26 d«»yp. The maximum fall was 3 inches, on the 21st. Comparisons: 1915, 966 inches; 1916, 18.62 inches; 1917, 12.13 inches. Although not the heaviest fall since I have been recording, the weather the pant month has been the most stormy. On the 14th, 21st, and 27th exceptionally heavy storms passed over this district —though of short duration—that of the 21st being the worst, with intermittent thunder for 12 houra.
