IMPORTATION OF FERTILISERS.

ANNUAL RETURNS. The returns of artificial fertilisers imported into New Zealand for the year ended March 31st, 1917, are now, bv the courtesy of the Comptroller of Customs, available in the following figures. These, aa usual are designed to show the returns of the year compared with those of the previous corresponding period. The results, which are somewhat startling, disclose a net decrease . of some 37,750 tons of phosphatic fertilisers imported. The decreases in this class were 26,000 tons of superphosphate, 14,000 tons of guano and rock phosphate, and 4000 tons of basic slag. On the other hand, 6000 tons more of Egyptian phosphate and 300 tons more of bonedust were imported. The decrease in the importation of phosphatic fertilisers, in which the soils of New Zealand, under the present system of farming are in urgent need, is the outstanding feature of the returns and to be most regretted.
