OTOROHANGA.

Own Correspondent.

After the long spell of wet weather we have been experiencing for the last seven or eight weeks, the present change has been exceedingly welcome, and in consequence the holidays havs been all that could be desired, aB far as climatic conditions were concerned. The business people also found the change had a marked effect, the local trade being exremely brisk during the week, especially Christmas and New Year Eves, large numbers went to Auckland, the Exhibition and races being the attraction, while locally the races at Pirongia on Boxing Day attracted numerous buggy loads of pleasure seekers and the Kihikihi races and Honikiwi settlers picnic on New Year's Day both had many patrons from his district. The Town Band played carols on Chrismas Eve and also played the New v ear in to the strains of "Auld Lang Syne." We regret to have to record the death of Mr Charles McColl, eettler of this district, which took place at his residence "Puketawa," Otorohanga, at 2 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31st. The deceased was was in hiß 75th year and leaves a widow, three daughters and one Bon to mourn his loss.

A little excitement was caused on Christmas Eve by two horses attached to a waggon bolting in Maniapoto Btreet. The frightened animals covered the ground in some style, but tha native driver pluckily stuck to them and managed to pull them up at the Waipa bridge. With the exception of a somewhat shattered waggon no damage was done. Mr Bowlin, the successful tenderer for the metalling contracts in the town, informs me that aa the river has fallen considerably he hopes to commence his contracts this week The Premier Pictures (Mr Langmuir proprietor) drew bumper houses on both Christmas and New Year's Eve. The programmes were excellent, and the numerous patrons went home thoroughly satisfied with the entertainment.

"Wishing you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you very much. From , Otorohanga

1913-14." The above is a copy of a well got up printed Christmas card a local native chief has been sending round to his friends. The "Thank you very much" rather tickled us. A pretty wedding took place at Mr Benner's residence on December 30th, the contracting parties being Mr David Congalton, of Waihi, and Miss K. M. Robertson, sister of Mrs Bennpr. The Rev. Mr White, of Waihi, officiated. After the ceremony the guests sat down to a sumptuous wedding breakfast when the übubl toasts were honoured. The bride looked eharimng in a white satin gown and carried a bouquet of white roses and sweet peas She travelled in a grey tailor-made costume, with pretty blue bat. The happy couple left for Waitumo by motor car en route for Rotorua.

Messrs T. G. Hosking and G. B. Osmond have left for Napier, where they intend to spend a few days.
