NEW PRIVY COUNCILLOR.
MR MASSEY'S APPOINTMENT. Commenting on the Right Hon. W. F. Massey's appointment to the Privy Council, the Christchurch Press says: "Short aa ha i been Mr M assay 'a tenure of office, hia services to the country have already baen very real, and all classes of the community will join in congratulating him on the honoui bestowed upon him by the King, and in the hop* that he may be long spared to enjoy it." The Christchurch Evening Star, a staunch Liberal journal, says: Political friends and opponents will join in congratulating the Hon. Wm. Massey on being made a Privy Councillor. When the British Government conferred this dignity upon the late Mr R. J. Secklon, the innovation occasioned surprise, not unmixed with chagrin in -lume quarters. Since then, Sir Joseph Ward haa been made a right honourable, and the distinction has become automatic as far as Premiers with any measure of public ser vice are concerned. Mr Massey has given many years of his life to the public in his political capacity, 'ind no one can fairly begrudge him recognition which he haa achieved.
