WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

- The ordinary monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held on Monday evening. There were present—Cra Scholes, chairman, Johnston, Gregg, Were, Berry, Smyth, O'Dwyer, and Potts. The chairman extended a welcome to Cr PottH, the recently-elected member for Te Rauamoa, who took his seat for the first time. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote enclosing certificates of the hypothecate of thirds in the Honi- - kiwi, Hangatiki, Mairoa, and Mangarapa special rating areas.—Received. Metal on Crown Land: The UnderSecretary for Lands wrote stating that n cases where the Crown granted land in fee simple the holders of such a title would be owners of any gravel or stone on such land.- -Received.

Tangitu Telephone: The Postal Department wrote to the effect that the Department did not at present propose to erect telephone linos to Mapiu and Mokauiti, and private lines could be erected thereto under the Country Telephones Act, 1912. The Department would lend fsee of charge serviceable second-hand telephones for private wire connections with a public office.—Received. Mr W. D. BowUr, president of the Waikato-Maniapoto Maori Land Board wrote acknowledging the letter of appreciation sent to him by the Council, and stating lie would always be glad to assist the Council with information which would help towards the collection of rateß.—Received. Pungarehu Loan: The Public Trustee wrote expressing dissatisfaction that the Pungarehu loan was not to be proceeded with. He had |,been informed that the ratepayers were unanimously in favour of it, and the docu- _ ments were all prepared by the Crown Solicitor. No further application would be entertained until costs amounting to £3 12s 6d were paid.— The clerk said the amount had been paid and the papers returned. Hauturu Road: The Kawhia County Council wrote inquiring if the Wai tomo Council would contribute its share towards the improvement of the Hauturu road on the boundary between the two counties. A grader would be working in the vicinity during the summer, and the work could be profitably carried out by that means.—Left to the engineer to act in conjunction with the Kawhia County engineer, the Waitomo County to contribute its share. Raising a Loan: Mr M. J. Kinnane wrote asking particulars concerning the raising of a loan.—Received. Collecting Native Rates: G. A. Monk Reikorangi, Wellington, wrote asking for information concerning the methods adopted for collection of native rates.—Received. Carting By-laws: Mr P. D. Hargreaves wrote requesting an exemption to put his waggon on the road. He pointed out that there were carriers on the road who did not comply with the by-law,and he had to pay for his carting sooner than flout the Council's authority.—On the motion of Cr> Potts and Gregg the request was granted between the monthß of September and May. Kumara Road: H. Rubscll wrote inquiring when the Council proposed to start metalling the portion of the Kumara road, for which money was raised some time ago.—The clerk said he had written to Mr Russell intimating that no money had been raisedjfor the road. Tenders: The following tenders were received for the additions, strong room, etc.:—R. L. Birch £B5l, A. Blackman r £296, D. J. McDonald £243.—The chairman said the prices were too high and he HUggestedJthey could do better. They urgently required a strong room but better prices might be obtained.—Resolved that tho matter be still left in the hands of the chairman and Cr Berry. Ot)rohanga Pound: The clerk of tho Otorohanga Town Council wrote asking if the County Council would share the cost of the pound.—The chairman aaid he had met the chairman of the Town Council and had arranged that the Town Council Bhoud erect the pound and have charge of it. He thought it was fair, and he did not think it would be wise to have dual ccntrol. It would be far better tor the Town Coucil to erect the pound and administer it for themselves.—-Cr Gregg said he thought they should assist in erecting the pound.—Cr Johnston thought the better way would be for the clerk to take action against owners of straying stock.—Resolved that no action be taken. , Te Kopua Road- W. Searancke wrote concerning the. laying off of a road to give access to Te Kopua. A deposit of £lO had been made by J. Ormshy.—The clerk said the amount had been paid and a report was to hae been obtained from the late engineer on the matter.—Resolved on the motion of the chairman and Cr Berry that the matter be left in the hands of the engineer and the councillor for the riding to report to next meeting. Refuse Destruction: A. J. Curson wrote submitting a plan of a refuse destructor.—Received. Application for Grant: Messrs Cotter Brcß. applied to the Council for a grant of £ls towards forming a road.—Left in the hands of the engineer and the councillor for the riding. Loan Proposals: The necessary resolutions were passed in connection with the raising of tho 10 per cent. additional on the loans in Hangatikl-Waitomo-Ruakura; Aria, and Otoro-hanga-Pirongia special rating areßS. Pukotarata Road: The Chief Surveyor submitted a plan for a road giving access to Puketarata.—Approved.
