THE RAILWAY CROSSING.

The Edjtor

Sir, —Railway crossings at best are dangerous, but the ona at the junction of Awakino road and Rora street from its position, coming as it does, at the foot of a grade in each case, is one o? the icost dangerous crossings in tbeD ominion. There has been one accident already which, while it was bad enough, might have been a lot worse, and it is only shtaer iuck that there has not been somebody killed there. An engine coming down the grade uaes no steam, but quietly glides down the grade, and when she whistles the chances are that a person driving down the Awakino road would not hear her as there are high hills between. While nothing that can be done wiil make it anything but a dangerous crossing, sumathing might be done to reduce the risk. Soma years ago the trustees of"the Maori meeting house at the request of the townspeople, cut down a willow tree at the corner which obscured the view, but since that a corrugated iron fence has been erected which is infinitely worse than the tree, being; erected on a sank above •■be rose! level it completely obscures the visv. Our native friends have ahv:;ys been wiling to assist in anvil! big thai, has been for the betfceru.sr.t ot the borough, ami I am sure th?f i :f cue matter is put before the tsup.tOcE of the- meeting house, in a light, they would fall in with i'c,e wishes ::•£ the local authority. Jh is no use waiting for the Railway Department £c act; they have hundreds of dangerous crossing? to consider. We have only one, and it is to hs hoped something will be done before a serious accident occurs ami valuable 3 ii/eo lost. —i am, etc., M W. FORSYTE.
