At the Sydney wool sales this week though there wan a good general demand, the market. showed some irregularity, and were occasionally a shade below May, especially for the best lines. Greasy brought up to 13Jd and scoured up to 121*.
Thj Fairbank coal mine, Blakeat, in Brisbane, is on fire. Flames and dense volumes of smoke are issuing from the tunnel. The mine has been idle for a fortnight and there is nobody nside.—Press Association. The small pox outbreak at Sydney has led the Publie Health authorities to adopt stringent measures to prevent the introduction of the disease to the Dominion. All persons arriving at the various ports from Sydney who do not show signs of successful vaccination have to be vaccinated forthwith. i It is stated that the lads in the military detention camp at Rip* Island have declined to drill, and that several of them have started hunger striking. The Peace Society's Council telegraphed to the Minister for Defence that they were informed the boys on Ripa Island bad been put in close confinement for insubordination and on short rations.
