SMALL POX IN SYDNEY.

A MILD OUTBREAK. a, •Weftaaa.-Prew AasoclaUc«.--OpOTl«» t Received this day, 9.60 a.m. Sydney, TMi Day. In cooooction with the oßtbrotkof ' small pox at Sydney it appears the first ease occurred about April 12th, being brought here by onefof toe crew of a steamer from Vancouver, >bere waa a mild outbreak. ' The Infective power is very low, ■osiog that though the disease haa prevailed so long, only sixty cases could be traced, whereof the majority have been slight attacks. Mr Holman Ktates it is not too

much to aay that it is only small pox technically. The majority of those attacked have>eturned to work, many doing to without even having medical advice. There ia now evidence that an epidemic of chicken pox is alto prevalent in Sydney at present. On May 80th the proprietor of a clothing factory at Redfern reported a number of female employees absenting themselves owing ♦o a rash, On the eame day a patient from the same factory was admitted to the hospital. The case was at first diagnosed as chicken pox, and it was discovered that about fifteen female employees had bean suffering from the same disease. After exhaustive investigation the authorities decided the outbreak waa chicken pox, though with some hesitation, owing to undsual nature of the eases. Several patients were than vaccinated. If the vaccination \ had been successful it would have aatisfied the doctors that the outbreak was chicken oox, but the results forced them to conclude it was ■mail pox, though of an extremely mild type.
