TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The above council met on Thursday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr J. Boddie), Crs M. J. Jones Spencer, Mostyn Jones, bomer ville.Howarth, Mabbett; Matthew ana Graham. , The councillors signed and m*ae their declarations. w Upon taking the chair, his Worship the Mayor said he was pleased to see a fair representation of old ano new councilor* at the table, and ne thought the ratepayers had reason to be pleased with the result of the election. He congratulated the old ccancillors upon their re-election which he thought proved conclusively that ne ratepayers were satisfied with ine work done by them during their previous term of office. He thought tha. a very large proportion of the counv cil's work should be done by be various committees which would greatly alleviate the work at the council table. Cr Somervilie said it was a privilege to sit under Mr Boddie, and felt 8&g that the new councillors would find the work of the council carried out under Mr Boddie's leadership in a businesslike manner. Mr E. H. Hardy (ex-Mayor) wrote apologising for his unavoidable abBence. . ~ . It was resolved that appreciation of the services rendered by Crs Hardy Lusk, Julian, Tammadge, Lever and Falwasser be placed on record. A letter was received from Mr Dillicar re drainage, and was referred to the Water Works and Drainage Committee. A letter from Mr McDonald was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee. The following committees were appointed: Legal and Finance Cis How arth, Somervilie, Mostyn Jones and the Mayor; Works, Crs Matthew Spencer, M. J. Jones and Mabbett, Sanitation, Fire Prevents and RerC= Graham, serves, Crs &ome-.viije, > Walsh- and Mabbett; Library, Crs Mostyn Jones, Walsh, and Matthew. It was resolved that meetings ot the council be held on the second Monday in each month, at i.du °' Amputation from the Fire Brigade waited upon the council and tendered an invitation to their function to be held on May 22nd, in the Town Hall. On the motion of Crs Walsh and Jones the invitation was accepted with thanks. . , Mr Jane suggested that a Bngade fire inspector should be appointed, and that he should have sole charge. On the motion of the Mayor, this matter was referred to tne Legal and Finance Committee. Mr J F Lever introduced a deputation of'ratepayers that certain work should be done on the Waiteti Toad and that the lighting scheme Bboold be carried as far as Mr Edgar's property.-The matter of the road was feft to the Works Committee and the lighting to the Electric Light Committee to deal with. an increase of £lO upon his original tender. After due consideration of the positcin, and upon the advice of tha borough engineer, the committee decided to accept the revised tender, and the town clerk was instructed to have the contract signed as early aa possible.

Crusher. —A communication Was submitted from the Manunui Town Bosrd engineer, asking if this council would be prepared to hire its stone crushes plant to his board, and if so, upon what terms. —It was resolved that the board's engineer be informed that this council cannot entertain the proposal to hire out the plant, but that the crusher will be for sale at any time, and we shall be pleased to consider an offer from them for the purchase of the plant. Permanent Levels of the Borough. —The engineer submitted plana of the permanent levels of Rora, Taupiri, King, and Sheridan streets, which the committee provisionally approved of and alio instructed that steps be now taken to advertise in accordance with Section 186 of "The Municipal Corporations Act, 1908," that the permanent leveels of these streets will be definitely fixed, and that any objections thereto, which may be received, are to be submitted to the council for consideration. The report was adopted.

FINANCE, LEGAL, AND ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. Temporary Plant. A communication from A. and T. Burt addressed to Mr Crookes, and dated April 24th, 1913, upon the subject of the erection and cost of a temporary plant, was submitted and considered by the committee. Cr Jones moved, that the committee recommend the council to accept the terms of A. and T. Burt's letter, with the exception of the last paragraph, and in connection with that particular clause the committee recommend the council to extend the time of completion of the contract for a period of three months, this recommendation having been arrived .at after due consideration and upon the advic6 of the consulting engineer, Mr Crookes. Seconded by Cr Somerville and carried.

Consulting Engineer. Cr Walsh and Somerville moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to Mr S. Irwin Crookes for the very painstaking manner in which he has at all times carried out his various duties in connection with the installation, and also for the excellent advice which he has volunteered to the Electric Light Comimttee.—Carried. Quirk's 20 Acres.—Crs Jones and Walsh moved that the matter of taking '.hereabouts 20 acres of Quirk's land under "The Public Works Act, 1908," for a recreation ground and public reserve, be held over until such time as the new council think fit to deal with the question.—Carried. The report was approved.

After the meeting of the council, at the invitation of his Worship the Mayor, those present adjourned to the Munciipal Hall and partook of supper. Mr Boddie welcomed all present and trusted they would spend a pleasant evening. The following toasts were honoured: —"The New Council," proposed by Mr Duncanson, responded to by Crs Walsh, Somerville, Matthew and Mabbett; "The Councils Officers," Cr Somerville—Messrs Lamb, Dodge and Bartley; "Strangers," the MayorMessrs Hine and J. B. Young; "Fire Brigade," Cr Somerville—Messrs Jane and Needham; "The Host," proposed by Mr J. B. Young; and "The Press." MuHical items and recitations were rendered by the following: Messrs Dawson. Pattison, Elliott and Howarth. Mr Lipscombe officiated at the piano. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent.
