The Commmonwealth destroyers' crews got a rousing welcome from a great gathering, including the ministers and leading citizens. The festivities included an official welcome by the Mayor and a torchlight procession. Speeches, congratulatory to the Australian Navy movement, were made by members of the Australian Natives Association, who presented each destroyer with a kangaroo, as a pet. The Boy Scouts presented a flag.
