PUBLIC HOLIDAYS.
In the House of Representatives on Thursday the Public Holidays Bill was further considered in committee. The Hon. D. Buddo agreed to fix Empire Day for the same day as the Sovereign's Birthday, as some exception had been taken to Empire Day and Dominion Day being statutory holidays. The Minister also agreed to alter the short title of the Bill to bring the measure into force as soon as it was passed. On the motion of Mr McLaren,_ subclause E was amended by providing that when Christmas Day is observed on Monday the reference in the award shall be deemed to refer to the next successive Tuesday. Mr Dillon moved that St. David's Day be observed on March Ist instead of on April 23rd as recommended by the committee. This was negatived by 38 votes to 22. The Bill was reported with amendments.
